(AU)

RESUMO

The Max-Mixed EWMA Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (MM EWMA) control chart is a statistical process control technique used for joint monitoring of the mean and variance of a process. This control chart is designed to detect small and moderate shifts in the mean and variance of a process by comparing the maximum of two statistics, one based on the mean and the other on the variance. In this paper, we propose a new MM EWMA control chart. The proposed chart is compared with existing control charts using simulation studies, and the results show that the chart performs better in detecting small and moderate shifts in both the mean and variance. The proposed chart can be helpful in quality control applications, where joint monitoring of mean and variance is necessary to ensure a product's or process's quality. The real-life application of the proposed control chart on yogurt packing in a cup data set shows the outperformance of the MM EWMA control chart. Both simulations & real-life application results demonstrate the better performance of the proposed chart in detecting smaller shifts during the production process.

RESUMO

Modern biomedical research often requires a three-dimensional microscopic analysis of the ultrastructure of biological objects and materials. Conceptual technical and methodological solutions for three-dimensional structure reconstruction are needed to improve the conventional optical, electron, and probe microscopy methods, which to begin with allow one to obtain two-dimensional images and data. This review discusses the principles and potential applications of such techniques as serial section transmission electron microscopy; techniques based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (array tomography, focused ion beam SEM, and serial block-face SEM). 3D analysis techniques based on modern super-resolution optical microscopy methods are described (stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy and stimulated emission depletion microscopy), as well as ultrastructural 3D microscopy methods based on scanning probe microscopy and the feasibility of combining them with optical techniques. A comparative analysis of the advantages and shortcomings of the discussed approaches is performed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Prevention of the development of pronounced skeletal abnormalities in patients with mesial occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biometric analysis of control and diagnostic models of dentition was performed in 60 patients with dental anomalies before and after treatment in 3 mutually perpendicular planes to identify violations in the formation of dental arches by sagittal and transversal dimensions, and alveolar processes - by vertical dimensions (methods of A. Pont, G. Korkhaus). Measurements of 23 parameters of TRG and sections of CBCT were carried out using the modified Nad-Ars technique with analysis of skeletal parameters before and after treatment. Treatment was carried out using dilators for the upper jaw in combination with a facial mask and further dynamic observation using active retention devices. RESULTS: The results of treatment showed an increase in the length of the anterior segment of the upper dental arch by 2.8±0.55 mm (p<0.05 mm); expansion in the area of temporary molars by 2.85±0.65 mm (p<0.05); in the area of permanent molars by 2.75±0.55 mm (p<0.05); in the area of the apical basis of HF by 3.82±0.45 mm (p<0.05). The length of the lower dental arch in the anterior segment has not changed. Analysis of TRG parameters showed a significant increase in the values of

RESUMO

Incidence data from 17-year veterinary neoplasm surveillance and registration were reviewed. Most of the neoplastic cases diagnosed in Nigerian veterinary teaching hospitals (VTHs) were in the avian (49%) and canine species (44%). Fewer cases were recorded in the equine (3.2%), bovine (2.4%), ovine (1.5%), caprine (0.3%) and porcine (0.15%) species. Marek's disease was the most prevalently diagnosed neoplastic disease of domestic animals in Nigerian VTHs from 2000-2017. Also, the Nigerian local breed had a higher mean distribution than any other dog breed and this was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Nearly all of the neoplastic cases diagnosed, were found in females (60.4%) and so the mean distribution of sex was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The digestive system, with 296 (46.25%) cases, was the anatomic location where the majority of the neoplastic cases were found. However, the mean distribution of different neoplastic anatomic sites was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, little emphasis is given to the appropriate diagnosis and recording of neoplastic cases that are diagnosed. The study provides information regarding the prevalence and distribution of tumours in different animal species consulted in Nigeria veterinary teaching hospitals. To illustrate all of this, ArcGIS software was used. Veterinary clinicians, pathologists and epidemiologists from Nigeria may benefit from the results of this study by freely accessing some specific data regarding the breed, the age group or the gender of some animal species diagnosed with different tumours.

RESUMO

The literature on lottery gambling shows that players do not select numbers randomly, a phenomenon which is called conscious selection. Mainly, players prefer "small" numbers (less than thirty), either because of the existence of small lucky numbers or because they are victims of the so-called birthday-number effect. Because lotto games are parimutuel, such preferences result in poor ticket choices in terms of achieving below average returns. Using data from Belgium, where approximately 10% of the population plays lotto games every week, this paper extends prior literature by documenting the existence of a gender gap in the birthday-number effect, with women displaying a stronger birthday-number effect than men, as well as the non-persistence of the birthday-number effect (and consecutively of the gender gap) when participants are asked to fill in a second lotto ticket immediately after their first one. The disappearance of the birthday-number effect in sequential choices appears to be driven by response speed, with participants being twice as fast to fill in the second ticket compared to the first one. Moreover, we find that participants who bet on their birthday numbers take significantly more time to complete their ticket. Contrary to prior research, we find that the strength of the birthday-number effect is positively related to deliberative number choices, not intuitive and automatic number choices. Our results are robust to controlling for potential confounding effects including those related to participants' age, education, self-esteem, and superstitious beliefs.

RESUMO

We investigated the effect of a decrease in blood viscosity on the mean BP during isovolumic hemodilution and vasodilating activity of the endothelium in normotensive Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Blood viscosity was reduced by isovolumic hemodilution (replacement of 10% of circulating blood with an equal volume of plasma). Hemodilution caused the same reduction in blood viscosity by 16% in both groups of rats. In Wistar rats, a decrease in blood viscosity did not significantly change in the mean BP; no significant correlations between blood viscosity and mean BP were observed before and after hemodilution. In SHR, a decrease in blood viscosity led to a significant decrease in the mean BP by 18%. Correlations were found between the mean BP and blood viscosity in SHR before (r=0.63; p=0.028) and after (r=0.71; p=0.009) isovolumic hemodilution. In SHR, a decrease in the index of vasodilating activity of the endothelium due to a decrease in the vasodilatory response to intravenous administration of the endothelium-dependent vasodilator acetylcholine was revealed. In SHR, BP passively follows the change, in this case, the decrease in blood viscosity, which attests to impaired BP regulation in response to changes in shear stress on the vascular endothelium caused by the development of endothelial dysfunction in hypertensive animals.

RESUMO

The effect of a new JNK inhibitor IQ-1 (11H-indeno[1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one oxime) was studied in male Wistar rats in a model of acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion. Area at risk and myocardial infarct zones were studied in two series of experiments: 16 h after a single dose of IQ-1 (25 mg/kg intraperitoneally during cardiac ischemia) and on day 5 after its course administration (25 mg/kg intraperitoneally during cardiac ischemia and daily over 4 days). On day 5 after ischemia/reperfusion, cardiodynamic indicators were also studied: systolic, end-diastolic, and minimum pressure in the left ventricle, stress-time index, as well as the maximum rates of pressure rise and fall in the left ventricle (+dP/dtmax and -dP/dtmax). In 16 h after ischemia/reperfusion, the infarct area in the control was 24±2% of the total area of the sections, while after administration of IQ-1 this parameter was 14±1% (p<0.05). On day 5, the infarct area in the control group was 25±1% of the total area of myocardial sections. A course of IQ-1 administration led to a significant reduction in the infarct area to 10±2% of the total area of myocardial slices. Course administration of IQ-1 led to improvement in contractile function and weakening of the diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricle: systolic pressure in the left ventricle increased by 20%, +dP/dtmax by 23%, voltage-time index by 12%, -dP/dtmax by 43%, and the minimum pressure in the left ventricle decreased by 3.4 times.

RESUMO

Introduction: Sarcopenia is associated with worsened outcomes in solid cancers. Temporalis muscle thickness (TMT) has emerged as a measure of sarcopenia. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the relationship between TMT and outcome measures in patients with malignant intra-axial neoplasms. Method: We searched Medline, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane databases for relevant studies. Event ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were analysed using the RevMan 5.4 software. Where meta-analysis was impossible, vote counting was used to determine the effect of TMT on outcomes. The GRADE framework was used to determine the certainty of the evidence. Results: Four outcomes were reported for three conditions across 17 studies involving 4430 patients. Glioblastoma: thicker TMT was protective for overall survival (OS) (HR 0.59; 95% CI 0.46-0.76) (GRADE low), progression free survival (PFS) (HR 0.40; 95% CI 0.26-0.62) (GRADE high), and early discontinuation of treatment (OR 0.408; 95% CI 0.168-0.989) (GRADE high); no association with complications (HR 0.82; 95% CI 0.60-1.10) (GRADE low). Brain Metastases: thicker TMT was protective for OS (HR 0.73; 95% CI 0.67-0.78) (GRADE moderate); no association with PFS (GRADE low). Primary CNS Lymphoma: TMT was protective for overall survival (HR 0.34; 95% CI 0.19-0.60) (GRADE moderate) and progression free survival (HR 0.23; 95% CI 0.09-0.56) (GRADE high). Conclusion: TMT has significant prognostic potential in intra-axial malignant neoplasms, showing a moderate to high certainty for its association with outcomes following GRADE evaluation. This will enable shared decision making between patients and clinicians.

RESUMO

This paper presents a new technique for forming SNOM (Scanning Near-Field Optical Microscopy) cantilevers. The technique is based on the continuous growth of a conical hollow tip using local ion-induced carbon deposition on standard tipless cantilever chips. This method offers precise control of the geometric parameters of the cantilever's tip, including the angle of the tip, the probe's curvature radius, and the input and output aperture diameter. Such control allows to optimize the probe for specific tasks. The use of local structure methods based on FIB (Focused Ion Beam) enables the production of SNOM cantilevers with high radiation transmittance, tip robustness, and the capability to measure sample topography in semi-contact AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) mode. The research focused on optimizing the technology for manufacturing tips with specific geometric characteristics, facilitating accurate navigation and positioning in the area of interest. The manufactured probe samples being tested demonstrate sufficient accuracy and mechanical durability of the tip. Overall, this technique offers a novel approach to forming SNOM cantilevers, providing precise control over geometric parameters and promising enhanced performance in various applications.

RESUMO

The aim the study. Evaluate the effectiveness of biofeedback therapy in the complex rehabilitation of masticatory muscle hypertonicity in patients with a high level of anxiety. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 40 patients aged 20 to 32 years with complaints of fatigue and discomfort in the area of chewing muscles, teeth compression during the day, nocturnal bruxism, crowding of teeth. Two groups were formed: the study group, whose patients underwent splint therapy in combination with biofeedback therapy trainings; in the control group, patients received treatment with splint therapy without the use of biofeedback therapy. Electromyography of the masticatory muscles at rest and during compression were used to diagnose hypertonicity of the masticatory muscles. To assess the psycho-emotional state, a medical and social questionnaire was conducted using questionnaires: «Health Questionnaire¼, Beck Depression Inventory, Spielberger-Khanin Anxiety Scale, SF-16 Quality of Life Scale. RESULTS: A decrease in the level of depression, anxiety was revealed with the stabilization of emotional sensitivity in relation to other people, emotional involvement in everyday life, and an increase in the quality of life. When comparing electromyographic data at rest and during clenching of teeth in patients of the study group the indicators were lower than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of biofeedback therapy at the stages of orthodontic treatment using splint therapy was established in the form of a decrease in the activity of masticatory muscles in patients of the study group. In the control group, the index of masticatory muscle activity decreased to a lesser extent. Biofeedback methods have shown a high level of effectiveness in reducing the symptoms of anxiety and depression, improving the quality of life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The current studies demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 infection results in increasing complications incidence and the total risk of death in cancer patients. SARS-CoV-2 infection triggers oxidative stress representing one of the major factors of the inflammation contributing to the complicated course of the diseases including cancer. AIM: To assess the effect of hypoxia caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection on the redox status of blood in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 10 patients with SARS-CoV-2, 11 mCRC patients with metachronous liver disease, and 14 mCRC patients with preceding SARS-CoV-2 infection were included in the study. The data on blood biochemistry (C-reactive protein, ferritin, transferrin, and free iron) were analyzed. The levels of superoxide radicals (ROS) in blood cells were determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) using the spin trap technique. The metalloproteinase activity was measured by polyacrylamide gel zymography with the addition of gelatin as a substrate. RESULTS: In mCRC patients with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, a 1.26-fold increase in ROS-generating activity of blood neutrophils was observed compared to mCRC patients with no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The blood content of C-reactive protein, transferrin, and free iron in mCRC patients with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection increased by 2, 6, and 1.4 times, respectively. The total activity of gelatinases in platelets and neutrophils in the blood of mCRC patients with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection was 1.4 and 1.2 times higher compared to mCRC patients with no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. CONCLUSION: mCRC patients with prior COVID-19 have a higher risk of exacerbation of inflammatory reactions. SARS-CoV-2 infection results in redox dіsbalance, which may contribute to the unfavorable course of the disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Is to develop a method for determining 2.4-dimethylhydroxybenzene (2.4-DMHOB) in biological material. The analytical methods used in the experiments were extraction, column chromatography of normal pressure, TLC, GC-MS and HPLC. To extract the analyte from the bioactive matrix, maceration with the binary insulating agent acetone-ethyl acetate (3:7) was used, observing the 2:1 mass ratio of the «insulating agent-matrix¼. Optimal conditions of semi-preparative analyte chromatography were achieved in column (150×10 mm) of «Silasbor¼ S-18 sorbent in elution with a mixture of acetonitrile-water (7:3), which was used in the proposed cleaning scheme, combining extraction and reversed-phase column chromatography. The application of the mobile phase of tetrachloromethane-dioxane (9.5:0.5) has been substantiated for the selective determination of 2.4-DMHOB by TLC («Sorbfil¼ plates). The expediency of confirming identification of the analyte in the form of 2.4-dimethyltrymethylsilylphenol using GC-MS (DB-5MS EVIDEX column (25.000×0.2 mm), stationary phase (5%-phenyl)-methylpolysiloxane, carrier gas - helium) has been shown. The group of characteristic particles in the mass spectrum of trimethylsilyl analyte derivative was represented by 45; 59; 73; 82; 91; 105; 119; 135; 149; 163; 179; 194 m/z ions. HPLC (Discovery C18 250×4.6 mm column, eluting liquid - acetate buffer solution with pH 5.5 - acetonitrile, 50:50) was used to confirm the identification and quantification of 2.4-DMHOB. A method for determining 2.4-DMHOB by the HPLC method in biological material (liver tissue) is proposed, which corresponds to the criteria of linearity, selectivity, accuracy, precision and stability. The minimum detectable quantity of 2.4-DMHOB in the bioactive matrix is 0.5 µg/g, the minimum determined quantity is 1.2 ug/g.

RESUMO

A right aortic arch is an anomaly of prenatal development characterized by location of aortic arch to the right from tracheal-esophageal complex. This variant of anatomy is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed accidentally. We performed open upper lobectomy for cancer of the upper lobe of the right lung in a patient with aortic arch dextraposition. Classical right-sided upper lobectomy in patients with right aortic arch is associated with certain difficulties. The most difficult objective is total excision of lymph nodes because trachea is hidden under aortic arch. A specific complication may be postoperative hoarseness associated with iatrogenic damage to the right recurrent laryngeal nerve.

RESUMO

The authors present minimally invasive surgical treatment of recurrent liver abscess caused by migration of fish bone from the upper gastrointestinal tract. Two-stage treatment implied small-caliber transparietal drainage of abscess with evacuation of purulent detritus at the first stage. At the second stage, primary percutaneous approach was transformed into access of sufficient diameter for flexible or rigid optics for visually controlled bone extraction. Foreign body removal through the drainage tube with endoscopic capture under visual control is preferable regarding safety compared to removal under ultrasound and/or X-ray control. Indeed, endoscopic approach is valuable for optimal positioning of the object and prevention of damage to liver parenchyma during extraction.

RESUMO

Analyzing fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is challenging and requires training to ensure the proficiency of health professionals and improve reliability. This scoping review aims to identify and map the available evidence on training health professionals to analyze FEES functional parameters. The method proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. The search was performed in MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL databases, and in the gray literature. Two blinded independent reviewers screened articles by title and abstract. Then, they read the full text of the included reports, considering the eligibility criteria. Data were extracted using a standardized form. Six studies met the established eligibility criteria, published between 2009 and 2022, with few participants. All these studies addressed training as part of the process to validate a rating scale. No standardized criteria were observed regarding the selection of experts and participants, training structure, and outcome measures to assess participants' competence. The reviewed literature indicates that training must be developed to equip students and health professionals who treat dysphagia, enabling them to analyze the functional parameters of the FEES, considering variables that may influence the participants' performance.

RESUMO

The subcommissural organ (SCO) is a well-developed gland present in the brain of vertebrates. The SCO secretes glycoproteins into the circulating cerebrospinal fluid and these assemble to form Reissner's fibre. It also plays an important function in neurogenesis and axonal guidance during embryogenesis. This study delves into the microscopic anatomy of the SCO in the adult greater cane rat (GCR), shedding light on its histoarchitectural characteristics. By utilizing histological techniques and microscopic analysis, we investigated the SCO's location and cellular composition within the brain of adult GCR. Our findings showed that the SCO in this species is located ventrally to the posterior commissure (PC) and dorsally to the third ventricle. The SCO consists of specialized ependymal or nuclear cell layer and apical processes lining the third ventricle. Moreover, the SCO's proximity to the PC and the third ventricle highlights its strategic position within the brain's ventricular system. With immunohistochemical analyses, the SCO cells expressed glial fibrillary protein when immunolabelled with Glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) antibody, a marker for astrocytes/astrocytic-like cells. Few microglia-like cells were immuno-positive for Ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) antibody, that are existing within the SCO. However, the SCO in the GCR showed a negative immunostaining to NeuN antibody. This study contributes to our understanding of the microscopic anatomy of the SCO in a lesser-studied mammalian species. Further research into the SCO's functional significance especially during development in the GCR, may hold promise for more insights into neurological health and pathology.

RESUMO

Early motor intervention is essential in children with cerebral palsy; however, it is unknown its effectiveness between 3 to 5years. The objective was to determinate the effectiveness of early motor intervention in the motor development of this population. A systematic literature search was performed in Pubmed/Medline, PEDro, OTSeeker, Embase, and LILACS. Finally, 18 articles were selected, of which 4 showed favorable changes in the experimental group in the outcomes of overall motor development and manual motor function, with sensory integration therapy and movement-induced restriction therapy, respectively; however, the results were not statistically significant, and the level of evidence was low. Early motor intervention could be cautiously considered for improving overall motor development and manual function. Higher-quality methodological studies are necessary.
